Assam Dancer Found Dead: CM Sarma Demands Probe into Suspected Train Murder
The mysterious and tragic death of 20-year-old Assamese cultural dancer Himashree Boro has sparked widespread outrage across Assam and triggered high-level inter-state political intervention. Her body was recovered from a forested area in Andhra Pradesh days after she went missing while traveling aboard the Vivek Express (Train No. 22503). Treating the case with utmost gravity, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dispatched urgent official communications to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressing deep anguish and demanding a thorough, impartial, and time-bound investigation into what appears to be a heinous crime and possible murder.
Distress Calls, On-Board Harassment, and an Unanswered Railway Helpline SOS
Himashree, a resident of Assam’s Kamrup district, had traveled to Andhra Pradesh alongside a 10-member cultural troupe comprising eight women and two men. Eager to return to Guwahati to sit for the State Bank of India (SBI) recruitment examination on October 9, she boarded the Vivek Express after her earlier October 5 ticket remained waitlisted. During the journey on October 6, she maintained active phone contact with her close circle, frantically alerting her friend Jyoti Chaudhary that several male co-passengers in her compartment were misbehaving with her and making obscene gestures. She also transmitted a short video clip to relatives and friends visibly capturing her fear, insecurity, and vulnerability inside the coach. Alarmed by the imminent danger, her friend contacted the railway emergency helpline (139) to report the critical situation, but communication went dead shortly afterward, with Himashree's phone ringing out before being switched off.
CM Sarma Flags Foul Play and Deputes Senior Police Team to Andhra Pradesh
Reacting strongly to the discovery of her body in a secluded jungle, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the welfare and safety of Assam's citizens are of paramount importance. In his letters to Chandrababu Naidu and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Sarma noted that the sequence of events strongly points toward foul play, abduction, or targeted homicide, urging that the perpetrators be tracked down and brought to justice without delay. To ensure round-the-clock coordination, the Assam government has dispatched a senior police officer to Andhra Pradesh to assist and monitor the ongoing investigation with local law enforcement teams. As Andhra Pradesh Police work to reconstruct the timeline from the moving train to the recovery site, the grieving family in Kamrup awaits the repatriation of their daughter’s mortal remains.
