30-Day Recharges and Standalone Calling Plans to Cut Annual Mobile Bills
In a major consumer-friendly intervention that alters the cost structure of mobile services in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rolled out landmark regulatory updates to protect telecom subscribers from restrictive billing cycles. For years, mobile service providers across the country have marketed 28-day packs as monthly recharges, forcing consumers into purchasing 13 recharges across a standard 365-day calendar year rather than 12. Under the newly implemented Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, the sectoral watchdog has made it mandatory for telecom service providers to offer true 30-day validity cycles, finally dismantling the artificial 28-day recharge cycle that imposed an extra month of subscription fees on everyday users.
Calculating the Real Household Savings: How Consumers Pocket Instant Relief
The transition from 28-day windows to full 30-day cycles delivers direct financial savings to millions of prepaid subscribers nationwide. Under the previous 28-day regime, a subscriber purchasing a ₹300 plan was required to renew 13 times over 365 days, racking up an annual recurring cost of ₹3,900. By stretching the tariff validity to a full 30 days at the same price point, users only need to recharge 12 times a year, bringing their yearly expenditure down to ₹3,600 and immediately saving an entire month's recharge—equating to an upfront 7.7% reduction or ₹300 saved annually. Similarly, users on standard ₹250 tiers see their yearly outlay drop from ₹3,250 to ₹3,000, ensuring tangible household savings provided operators maintain price parity for these revised monthly packs.
Relief for Wi-Fi and Feature Phone Users: Mandatory Unbundled Voice and SMS Tariffs
Beyond addressing validity durations, the regulatory overhaul introduces significant relief for customers who do not consume mobile data, including senior citizens, basic feature phone owners, and individuals operating permanently on home or office Wi-Fi networks. TRAI has explicitly directed major operators—including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi)—to launch standalone special tariff vouchers that bundle only unlimited voice calls and SMS services without forcing expensive data allocations onto the consumer. The regulatory body has further instructed telecom firms to proportionately decrease subscription tariffs for users opting out of data packages, ensuring that subscribers no longer pay inflated bills for unused cellular data allocations while completing essential calling and banking OTP requirements.
