12 Bangladeshi Nationals Arrested in Goalpara After Broker Flees With Cash

Assam Police have arrested twelve Bangladeshi nationals, comprising nine adults and three young children, in the Goalpara district for illegally crossing the international border into Indian territory, uncovering what senior officials suspect is an organized cross-border human trafficking and unlawful migration syndicate. Disclosing the operation in a public statement on social media, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the distressed group was intercepted on Friday night after alert local residents spotted them weeping and wandering aimlessly in Goalpara. Preliminary field interrogations conducted by local law enforcement officers confirmed that the group had fallen prey to an organized racket that systematically lures vulnerable foreign nationals across porous frontier corridors under the fraudulent promise of lucrative commercial employment in India.

Smuggled via Meghalaya Border: The Guwahati Transit and Fraudulent Job Trap

Investigative findings shared by Chief Minister Sarma revealed that the group was trafficked into India on October 5 through the unfenced terrain of Jaflong along the Meghalaya border by a primary syndicate handler identified as Sabor. Upon slipping into Indian territory, a local handler belonging to the Khasi community escorted the group directly to Guwahati, where they were covertly harbored in a safe house for three days. To convince the victims, the broker showed them promotional mobile videos purportedly showing other Bangladeshi immigrants working at an industrial firm in Guwahati, promising that stable jobs awaited them. The broker had struck a covert financial agreement with the prospective enterprise management to collect a finder's commission of ₹20,000 per adult candidate, with the stipulation that this recruitment fee would be recovered through deductions from their monthly wages once they commenced work.

Robbed at Railway Station and Abandoned: Group Detained in Goalpara Amid Trafficking Probe

The illicit transit unraveled near the Guwahati railway station, where the handler turned hostile, robbing the group of their remaining 7,000 Bangladeshi Taka and a mobile handset before absconding from the area. Stripped of their financial means and stranded without local contacts, the helpless group boarded a passenger bus bound for Goalpara on Friday night, where their public breakdown drew the suspicion of vigilant community members who promptly alerted the administration. Assam security agencies have initiated a broader manhunt to track down the absconding broker and his regional conduits operating across the interstate corridor between Meghalaya and Assam. Law enforcement authorities have registered formal cases under applicable immigration and border security statutes while evaluating human trafficking charges against the organized smuggling ring.
