SSC CGL 2026: Competition Skyrockets with 30 Lakh+ Applicants; Check Your New Sectional Timing Rules

The competition for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) 2026 recruitment has reached a fever pitch. With a massive pool of over 3.06 million candidates vying for just 12,256 positions across central ministries and departments, the intensity is higher than ever. Bihar has emerged as a major hub, contributing over 700,000 applicants alone. With the ratio currently standing at approximately 250 candidates competing for every single vacancy, aspirants must prepare for a rigorous selection process.

Important Correction Window Opens Tomorrow

Did you make a mistake on your application form? The SSC has announced a dedicated correction window for all candidates. You can log in and make necessary modifications from July 1 to July 7, 2026. Officials strongly advise all applicants to verify their details thoroughly, as this is the final opportunity to ensure your information is accurate before the examination process moves forward.

Game-Changing: New Sectional Timing Rules

The 2026 recruitment brings a significant overhaul to the exam structure, with the implementation of strict "sectional timing." No longer can candidates balance their time across sections based on preference.

  • Tier-I (Prelims): The one-hour computer-based test now mandates a strict 15-minute limit for each of the four sections (General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English). Once 15 minutes expire, the screen will automatically transition to the next section.

  • Tier-II (Mains): Similar constraints apply. For Paper-I, Section-1 (Maths & Reasoning), candidates get 30 minutes for each subject. Section-2 (English) allows 40 minutes for 45 questions, while General Awareness is limited to 20 minutes for 25 questions. Computer Knowledge has been allotted 15 minutes for 20 questions.

Exam Schedule and Selection Roadmap

The SSC has provided a tentative schedule for the upcoming tiers to help candidates plan their preparation strategy:

  • Tier-I Examination: Expected in August–September 2026.

  • Tier-II Examination: Expected in December 2026. The final selection will be based exclusively on Tier-II performance and the post-preferences registered by the candidate during the pre-final result phase. It is essential to remember that post-preferences submitted online will be considered final and cannot be modified later.

Final Merit and Qualifying Standards

Understanding the merit criteria is crucial for every aspirant:

  • General Posts: Merit is determined by Tier-II Paper-I (Sections-I & II). However, qualifying the Computer Knowledge Test (Section-III) and Data Entry Speed Test (Section-IV) is mandatory.

  • Specialized Posts (JSO/AAO): Merit for these roles includes the aggregate marks of Paper-I combined with Paper-II (Statistics) or Paper-III (Finance & Economics), respectively. With the implementation of negative marking—one-fourth mark deduction in Tier-I and one-third in Tier-II—precision is just as important as speed in this year’s high-stakes examination.
