The controversy intensified after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a sharp attack during a public address in Rae Bareli. The Chief Minister alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President visited the sacred Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya and immediately partook in a fish feast afterward. Criticizing the sequence of events, the Chief Minister questioned the cultural sensitivity of opposition leaders visiting holy sites while participating in non-vegetarian meals during religious observances.

The remarks drew strong reactions across the political spectrum. Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) President Om Prakash Rajbhar weighed in on the debate, suggesting that definitions of vegetarian and non-vegetarian often depend on preparation methods, such as whether ingredients like onion and garlic are used. Meanwhile, Fisheries Development Minister Sanjay Nishad defended traditional diets, stating that communities dependent on fisheries naturally include fish in their meals, while criticizing political posturing. The local saint community in Ayodhya also expressed displeasure over the timing of the meal during the sacred month.

In response to the accusations, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai categorically denied attending a fish feast after his temple visit. Clarifying his itinerary, Rai explained that he attended a convention organized by local community members where traditional customs were respected, and he challenged critics to produce any verifiable photographic evidence supporting the claims, asserting that the allegations were politically motivated falsehoods.
