Ministry of Defence Terminates Meerut Cantt Board Member Dr. Satish Sharma Following CBI Bribery Arrest
The Ministry of Defence has officially terminated the membership of Dr. Satish Chandra Sharma, a nominated member of the Meerut Cantonment Board, following a high-profile corruption case. This decisive action has been taken under Section 34 of the Cantonment Act, 2006, marking a historic and unprecedented development for the local civic body. Dr. Sharma is currently lodged behind bars at Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad after being caught red-handed by the Central Bureau of Investigation while accepting a corrupt payment. The swift administrative response highlights the central government's zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and misconduct among public representatives holding prestigious administrative positions within military cantonment areas across India.
CBI Trap and Arrest Details
The corruption scandal unfolded when the Ghaziabad branch of the CBI executed a successful trap on May 30 based on a formal complaint filed by contractor Vicky Kashyap. Investigators caught Dr. Satish Chandra Sharma red-handed at his residence in Ansal Town while he was accepting a bribe amounting to three lakh rupees in connection with a lucrative Gandhi Bagh contract. Following his apprehension, he was immediately produced before the specialized CBI court, which remanded him to judicial custody at Dasna Jail. Legal troubles deepened for the accused when the special CBI court formally rejected his bail plea on August 5, paving the way for the Ministry of Defence to initiate formal dismissal proceedings while he remained incarcerated.
Administrative Follow-Up and Jail Service of Orders
Reacting swiftly to the judicial developments, the Meerut Cantonment Board initiated disciplinary procedures under Section 34 of the Cantonment Act and served an official show-cause notice directly to Dr. Sharma inside Dasna Jail. Although Dr. Sharma submitted a written response from prison defending his position, the Ministry of Defence found the explanation unsatisfactory and issued a formal termination order. Cantt Board officials and employees subsequently traveled to Dasna Jail to personally serve the official termination papers to the jailed member. Cantt Board spokesperson Jaipal Singh Tomar officially confirmed that Dr. Satish Sharma's membership has been completely canceled in accordance with the strict directives issued by the Ministry of Defence, leaving the board with no active nominated civilian members at present.
Historic First in Meerut Cantt Board History
This landmark decision marks the first time in the entire history of the Meerut Cantonment Board that a nominated member has lost their official position due to corruption and criminal allegations. Dr. Satish Chandra Sharma originally assumed office as a nominated member of the Cantt Board in February 2022, after which his tenure saw successive extensions of six months or one year. Past nominated members who served the board across decades include notable figures such as S.K. Garg, Sunder Lal Jain, Rajendra Prasad Maheshwari, Satya Prakash Ahluwalia, and Narendra Pal Singh. However, Dr. Sharma's tenure comes to an ignominious end on August 20, 2026, setting a stern precedent for integrity and accountability within cantonment boards nationwide.
