Divine Bond of Protection: How Lord Vishnu Became the Spiritual Brother of Goddess Parvati According to the Shiva Purana

Lord Vishnu's Special Role in the Shiva-Parvati Wedding

When the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati was being arranged, Mother Parvati grew concerned about the traditional wedding rites. In ancient Indian culture, a brother plays a vital and protective role during a sister's wedding ceremonies.

Recognizing her worry, Lord Vishnu graciously intervened and promised to fulfill all the duties and responsibilities of an elder brother. During the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, Lord Vishnu actively performed the rituals assigned to a brother, sealing a sacred bond that earned him the permanent status of Goddess Parvati's spiritual brother. Consequently, Lord Kartikeya (Murugan), the son of Shiva and Parvati, is fondly regarded as Lord Vishnu's nephew.

Reincarnation and the Connection in Dwapara Yuga

The sacred brother-sister dynamic between Lord Vishnu and Goddess Parvati also manifests in their earthly incarnations. Before her birth as Parvati, the Goddess was born as Sati or Dakshayani. However, during the Dwapara Yuga, their divine connection was vividly displayed through the birth of Lord Krishna and Yogmaya.

When Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva, and simultaneously Yogmaya (an incarnation of the divine feminine energy) was born to Yashoda and Nanda in Gokul, Vasudeva swapped the infants to save Krishna from Kansa. When Kansa attempted to harm the divine infant, she slipped from his hands, rose into the sky, and assumed her cosmic form. Because Krishna (an avatar of Lord Vishnu) and the Divine Mother were born at the same time in those respective roles, they became eternally linked as brother and sister.
