Andhra Pradesh Health Department: 7-Year-Old Girl Dies and 52 Fall Ill After Consuming Malaria Medication in Palavadam

A devastating tragedy has struck Andhra Pradesh’s Palavadam district, raising serious questions regarding public health administration and medication safety. A seven-year-old schoolgirl tragically lost her life, while 52 other residents fell severely ill after consuming anti-malarial medication distributed by local health workers. The alarming incident has sent shockwaves across the region, prompting immediate government intervention and high-level administrative probes into the quality and distribution of the drugs.

How the Tragedy Unfolded in Golaguppa Village

According to official reports, preventive anti-malarial tablets—specifically chloroquine—were distributed to 71 residents in Golaguppa village, located near the inter-state border with Telangana in the Palavadam district. Shortly after ingesting the medication, multiple villagers began experiencing acute adverse reactions, severe dizziness, and sudden health deterioration.

Recognizing the gravity of the medical emergency, district authorities launched an immediate rescue operation. Twenty-nine patients were rushed across the border for advanced care at a hospital in Telangana, while 24 others were admitted to a nearby local health center. Tragically, 7-year-old Madivi Jamuna, a second-grade student, succumbed to her condition during treatment. Doctors have confirmed that the remaining hospitalized patients are currently stable under observation.

High-Level Investigation Ordered by CM Chandrababu Naidu

Taking swift cognizance of the grave administrative negligence, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu demanded a comprehensive report from senior health officials and ordered a thorough high-level investigation into how standard medication distribution led to fatal consequences. The Chief Minister directed district authorities to ensure that all affected villagers receive the best possible medical care without delay.

District Collector Dinesh Kumar appealed to local residents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is tightly monitored and under control. To manage the crisis on the ground:

• A specialized 9-member medical team from Kakinada Government General Hospital was immediately dispatched to the affected village.

• Three additional medical teams from Vijayawada, Rajamahendravaram, and Kakinada have been mobilized to provide support.

• A dedicated temporary medical camp has been established directly within Golaguppa village, staffed by expert physicians continuously tracking patient vitals.

Preliminary inquiries are underway to determine whether the adverse reactions stemmed from expired medicine, incorrect dosage administration, or a batch defect, as health authorities work to uncover the exact cause of the tragedy.
