Delhi Drone Policy 2026: Draft Finalized to Create Over 1,000 Jobs and Boost UAV Infrastructure with ₹85 Crore Budget
Delhi is gearing up for a major technological and economic leap as the local government finalizes the comprehensive draft of its ambitious new drone policy. Aimed at transforming the national capital into a thriving hub for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) innovation, manufacturing, and commercial services, the policy is slated for cabinet presentation within the next month. With an allocated budget of ₹85 crore spanning five years, the upcoming framework is projected to generate over 1,000 new employment opportunities, supporting local startups, educational institutions, and cutting-edge research in the aviation sector.
Awaiting Cabinet Clearance and Policy Roadmap
According to Information Technology Minister Pankaj Singh, the proposed five-year drone policy has completed internal drafting and is currently undergoing rigorous inter-departmental consultations. Once final ministerial sign-offs are secured, the file will proceed through legal and finance departments before reaching the Delhi Cabinet for formal approval within a month. The financial layout is strategically designed to provide vital backing to early-stage startups, commercial drone operators, and academic institutions conducting specialized UAV research within the metropolitan region.
Focus on Research, Testing Hubs, and Skill Development
To build a robust ecosystem, the policy places heavy emphasis on developing specialized infrastructure, including dedicated drone research clusters, flight testing zones, and centers of excellence. To attract private investment and entrepreneurship, the government is actively evaluating fiscal incentives such as capital subsidies and state GST reimbursements. Recognizing the rising demand for qualified professionals, the initiative also prioritizes skill development. Technical training programs through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), remote pilot certification courses, and student awareness programs across schools are core components of the blueprint.
Expanding Commercial Applications and Government Utility
The policy outlines an expansive roadmap for integrating drone technology into both civil administration and commercial industries. Government bodies plan to utilize UAVs for enhanced policing, aerial surveillance, real-time traffic management, disaster response coordination, land surveying, unauthorized encroachment detection, and detailed 3D mapping, with special operational scopes being explored around the Yamuna River basin. Simultaneously, commercial drone deployment will be actively encouraged across high-growth sectors such as real estate development, telecommunications, and media production.
Ensuring Strict Safety Protocols and Regulatory Compliance
While promoting technological expansion, the framework places paramount importance on public safety and airspace security. The government intends to establish a robust local governance framework that aligns seamlessly with existing national guidelines, specifically coordinating with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) Digital Sky Platform. By strengthening monitoring mechanisms and enforcement protocols, the policy ensures the controlled, safe, and lawful deployment of drones across the capital's sensitive airspace.
