Spearheaded by Dr. Asis Bala at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST)—an autonomous body under the Ministry of Science and Technology—in collaboration with Dr. K.P. Bhabak from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, researchers have successfully engineered a novel compound named RK-251.
Unlike conventional drugs that circulate indiscriminately throughout the body, RK-251 remains relatively inactive in healthy normal tissues. Its architecture is specifically calibrated to awaken and exert its therapeutic properties only when it infiltrates the microenvironment of a cancer cell.
How the RK-251 Drug Targets Tumors and Spares Healthy Cells
Conventional chemotherapy attacks both tumor cells and healthy cells indiscriminately, leading to widespread physical degradation. To overcome this limitation, researchers capitalized on a unique biological quirk: cancer cells typically produce abnormally high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
When the RK-251 drug enters a cancer cell, it interacts with these elevated ROS levels, triggering an activation switch. This chemical reaction releases NBDhex, a potent anti-cancer agent that specifically targets and neutralizes proteins essential for the survival and treatment resistance of cancer cells. By restricting anti-cancer activity strictly to malignant areas while limiting exposure to healthy tissues, RK-251 minimizes collateral damage and redefines precision oncology.
