Vishal Mega Mart Shares Surge 12% As Gunendra Kapoor Reappointed MD & CEO Alongside Strong Q1 Earnings
Shares of Vishal Mega Mart witnessed a massive rally, surging nearly 12% to an intraday high of ₹115.40 on Monday and putting the stock on track for its largest single-day gain since its market listing in December 2024. The sharp upward movement came on the heels of the company's official announcement regarding top-level leadership continuity, paired with robust financial performance numbers for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. Investors cheered the strategic move as the retail giant continues to expand its physical store footprint and scale its quick commerce operations across the country.
Gunendra Kapoor Reappointed For A Five-Year Term
On August 21, the company's board of directors approved the reappointment of Gunendra Kapoor as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, acting upon the strong recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. Kapoor, who was previously serving a three-year term set to expire in June 2027, has now been re-designated as Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer for a fresh five-year term running from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2031, subject to shareholder approval. With over 42 years of extensive management and investment experience across major consumer and retail entities like Hindustan Lever, Unilever Nigeria, Reliance Industries, and TPG Capital, leadership stability has reinforced investor confidence.
Robust Q1FY27 Financial Performance and Store Expansion
The market rally was strongly supported by an impressive scorecard for the June quarter. Vishal Mega Mart reported a 26% year-on-year surge in net profit, reaching ₹259 crore compared to ₹205 crore in the corresponding period last year. Total revenue climbed by 18.7% to ₹3,727 crore, while operating EBITDA rose by 18.7% to ₹545 crore with a stable EBITDA margin of 14.6%. The company continued aggressive physical expansion by adding 24 new outlets during the quarter, bringing its total store count to 819 alongside a strong 10% year-on-year growth in same-store sales.
Scaling Quick Commerce and Private Label Dominance
Driving its multi-channel retail strategy, Vishal Mega Mart has successfully expanded its quick commerce services to 767 stores across 520 cities, serving a registered user base of 1.41 crore customers. Revenue contribution remained well-balanced across segments, with apparel capturing 47.4%, general merchandise contributing 27.3%, and FMCG accounting for 25.2%, while high-margin private label brands drove 75.2% of total sales. While management acknowledged that persistent inflation impacted consumer demand slightly in Q1, leadership remains highly optimistic about sustaining robust growth trajectories in the upcoming quarters.
