Testing on Head and Neck Cancer Patients in Guwahati Reveals Tobacco Exposure Links

To validate the technology, researchers tested the AI platform on biological samples collected from 27 head and neck cancer patients in Guwahati, Assam. The computational analysis successfully revealed specific alterations and DNA damage patterns linked directly to smokeless tobacco exposure, reflecting high regional consumption rates of tobacco and betel nuts across northeastern states. Experts emphasize that while the detection of "DNA adducts"—chemicals that alter DNA segments—highlights exposure to hazardous substances, it does not act as definitive proof that the specific exposure caused the cancer, as cellular repair mechanisms often fix minor damage. Nonetheless, oncologists and computational biologists believe that scaling this technology through large-scale clinical trials could revolutionize personalized treatment strategies, helping doctors identify risk factors, improve patient screening, and prevent future complications.
