Why banks are closed on Monday 21 September 2026 – regional holidays explained

Banks in India are normally open on Mondays, but on 21 September 2026 a few states have declared a public holiday, meaning most branches are shut in those regions.

States where banks are closed today

Assam, Kerala and Meghalaya have announced a holiday for today. All scheduled and private banks, including SBI, ICICI, Axis, HDFC, Union, Kotak Mahindra, Yes Bank, IndusInd, Federal Bank and others, will remain closed in these states.

Reasons for the closures

In Assam the holiday marks the birth anniversary of the cultural icon Shankardev, a celebrated saint and reformer. Kerala observes Sri Narayana Guru Samadhi Day, a day of reverence for the social reformer.

Banks that remain open

All other states – Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and the rest of the country – will see banks operating as usual.

Upcoming bank holidays

Monday 22 September 2026 will also be a bank holiday in Ranchi, where the local community observes Karma Puja. On Tuesday 23 September, banks in Jammu and Kashmir will be closed to commemorate the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh.
