PB Fintech Could Surge 91% to ₹2,310: Bernstein Backs Stock Despite IRDAI Regulatory Crash

PB Fintech, the parent entity of digital insurance aggregator Policybazaar, experienced one of the most violent sell-offs in its listed history across Thursday and Friday, following regulatory headwinds sparked by proposed draft guidelines from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The proposed reforms around insurance distribution commissions sent shockwaves through the fintech counter, triggering a record single-session plunge of 36 percent on Thursday, followed by an additional 4 percent drop on Friday that briefly pushed the counter below its initial public offering (IPO) issue threshold of ₹1,150. The stock settled Friday's session 3.5 percent lower at ₹1,164.8 per share on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), erasing substantial market capitalisation as market participants recalibrated valuation multiples against looming commission caps.

Bernstein's Bull Case: ₹2,310 Target Signals 91% Upside Despite 40% Take-Rate Cut

Despite widespread market panic, global brokerage firm Bernstein issued an assertive research update reaffirming its "Outperform" stance on PB Fintech, setting a 12-month target price of ₹2,310 per share. This target implies an upside potential of nearly 91 percent from Friday's closing price. Bernstein conducted a scenario analysis evaluating the operational fallout if the proposed IRDAI framework enforces a 40 percent compression in the platform's insurance distribution take rates. The brokerage calculated that such a regulatory change could trigger a 36 percent contraction in consolidated FY2028 revenues and temporarily strain liquidity due to a shift toward trail-based commission payouts on term policies. However, the report noted that steady fee-based expansion across credit marketplace Paisabazaar, combined with lower customer acquisition costs and direct business expenses, would act as a buffer against commission compression.

Profit Realignment: Expense Rationalization, FY2030 Outlook, and Consensus Sentiment

To counter compressed distribution margins, PB Fintech management communicated plans to rein in discretionary growth expenditures across FY2028, targeting cost reductions in call-centre staffing, distributor variable payments, and digital performance marketing. In Bernstein's stress-tested model, net profit after tax for FY2028 is projected to contract by up to 34 percent to approximately ₹1,100 crore, down from an anticipated ₹1,250 crore in FY2027, with organic premium expansion potentially moderating by 4 percent before stabilizing by FY2029. While Bernstein revised its long-range FY2030 earnings projection down to ₹2,000 crore from an earlier estimate of ₹3,200 crore, long-term investor appetite remains constructive. Out of 25 equity research analysts actively tracking PB Fintech, 16 maintain a "Buy" or "Outperform" rating, five suggest a "Hold", and only four recommend a "Sell", reflecting confidence in the company's competitive moat.
