Market Reversal: Sensex and Nifty Slip Into the Red After a Strong Opening Amid Mixed Global Cues

Indian equity markets witnessed a sudden mid-morning reversal of fortunes during Thursday's trading session. Despite opening on a positive note in early trade, benchmark indices lost momentum as selling pressure intensified across heavyweights, dragging both the Sensex and Nifty from green territory into negative terrain by mid-morning.

Mid-Morning Market Volatility and Top Losers

After starting the day on an optimistic footing—with the BSE Sensex opening 103 points higher at 77,576 and the NSE Nifty advancing 69 points to 24,269—market sentiment deteriorated rapidly.

By mid-morning, the momentum shifted entirely to the bearish track:

  • Sensex Movement: The 30-share index slipped into the red, trading down 121 points at 77,351. Major laggards included NTPC, HCL Technologies, Power Grid Corporation, and Hindustan Unilever, which registered sharp declines ranging between 1.16% and 1.77%.

  • Nifty Movement: The broader Nifty index retreated 21 points to trade at 24,186.

  • Market Breadth: On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), out of 3,264 active stocks, 1,797 traded in the red while 1,346 advanced into the green. A total of 74 stocks hit upper circuits, and 44 touched lower circuits.

Global Cues and Commodity Trends

Domestic market movements unfolded against a backdrop of mixed international signals. While GIFT Nifty had earlier flashed a weak opening—slipping around 95 points near 24,333—regional Asian markets displayed resilience, buoyed by strong corporate earnings from US tech major Nvidia. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 2.22%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.41%, and MSCI’s broader Asia-Pacific index gained 0.6%.

In the commodity and currency space, crude oil prices softened following reports that Iran and Oman were nearing an agreement regarding transit routes across the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures dipped 0.7% to $87.24 per barrel, and WTI crude fell 0.7% to $81.67 per barrel. Meanwhile, spot gold recovered slightly, stabilizing near $4,615.27 per ounce following overnight declines triggered by sticky US inflation data and a strengthening US dollar.
