L&T Eyes Rare Earth Magnet Manufacturing with Bid for ₹7,280 Crore Incentive Scheme

In a major strategic diversification move, engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is reportedly preparing to manufacture rare earth permanent magnets in India. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, the company is gearing up to submit a bid for the Indian government's lucrative ₹7,280 crore incentive scheme designed to foster domestic critical mineral manufacturing and reduce heavy reliance on foreign supply chains.

Stepping Beyond Traditional Engineering Horizons

While L&T has historically built its stellar reputation on core competencies in infrastructure construction, heavy engineering, and complex industrial projects, a foray into rare earth magnet production represents an entirely new technological frontier. Manufacturing rare earth permanent magnets demands high-precision engineering and specialized metallurgical expertise. Consequently, industry insiders note that to successfully execute this venture, L&T will actively seek out a qualified technology partner possessing the requisite intellectual property and manufacturing know-how.

High Stakes and 15 Bids for Government Incentives

The central government's ambitious production incentive scheme has already attracted massive industry interest, pulling in roughly 15 competitive bids so far. Prominent contenders eyeing a slice of the program include Japan's Proterial alongside a strategic consortium comprising two major Indian automobile manufacturers. The government's comprehensive seven-year support program, approved last year, features ₹6,450 crore allocated for sales-related incentives alongside ₹750 crore dedicated to capital subsidies. The ultimate objective is to build a robust domestic production capacity of 6,000 metric tons of rare earth magnets annually while backing approximately five major manufacturing players.

Countering China's Monopoly and Securing Critical Supply Chains

L&T's potential entry comes at a critical geopolitical juncture for global technology and automotive supply chains. China currently maintains an ironclad grip on the market, controlling approximately 90 percent of the world's rare earth magnet production. Following Beijing's imposition of strict export restrictions on these vital components, nations worldwide have scrambled to diversify their sources. Rare earth permanent magnets are indispensable building blocks for the modern green economy, serving as core components in electric vehicle (EV) motors, renewable wind turbines, industrial automation robotics, and advanced consumer electronics. By encouraging domestic champions and attracting foreign joint ventures, India's incentive policy aims to secure strategic self-reliance in cutting-edge manufacturing.
