Hero Motors Shares Lock in 20% Upper Circuit Following Massive ₹281 Crore Block Deal

In a dramatic turnaround following its subdued market debut, shares of automotive powertrain technology firm Hero Motors surged into the 20 percent upper circuit on Thursday, September 24. Strong institutional buying pushed the stock to trade more than 40 percent above its initial public offering (IPO) issue price of ₹84. The sudden upward momentum followed a high-volume block deal on Dalal Street, where approximately 24 million shares—representing roughly 5.3 percent of the company's total issued equity—changed hands in a single transaction window. The trades were executed at an average price of ₹117 per share, taking the cumulative transaction size to approximately ₹281 crore.

Rebounding from Subdued Debut to Strong Secondary Rally

The aggressive buying marks a stark reversal from the stock's listing performance on Wednesday, September 23. Hero Motors initially opened in the red, debuting at ₹82 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and ₹82.10 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), delivering a discount of around 2.38 percent and 2.26 percent against its final issue price of ₹84 per share. However, steady accumulation emerged through its maiden trading session, lifting the counter to close day one at ₹98.40 on the NSE and ₹98.51 on the BSE. The subsequent large-scale block transaction provided fresh momentum, sending the counter directly to its statutory daily upper circuit threshold.

Strong Demand Across Retail and Non-Institutional Bidders

The ₹1,000-crore primary public offering had generated strong demand across market segments during its three-day subscription window, finishing 6.66 times oversubscribed. Non-institutional investors (HNIs) drove bidding with an oversubscription level of 9.86 times, while the retail individual investor portion was booked 8.23 times. Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) recorded a subscription rate of 1.49 times. Priced within a band of ₹79 to ₹84 per share, the public offering comprised a fresh equity issue of ₹600 crore alongside an offer for sale (OFS) of ₹400 crore, preceded by an anchor book allocation that raised ₹300 crore from institutional marquee investors.

Debt Reduction and Global Automotive Client Footprint

Out of the ₹600 crore raised through fresh issuance, Hero Motors earmarked ₹190 crore specifically for the repayment, prepayment, and redemption of outstanding borrowings, with the remaining capital allocated toward targeted capital expenditure, operational scaling, and general corporate requirements. The auto-component specialist engineers and manufactures advanced powertrain systems, catering to original equipment manufacturers across India, Europe, the United States, and the ASEAN corridor. Its specialized product portfolio serves two-wheelers, electric bicycles, off-road utility models, heavy commercial vehicles, and hybrid-electric passenger cars, backed by prominent tier-1 clients such as BMW, Ducati, Enviolo, Formula Motorsport, Hummingbird EV, and HWA. At the upper IPO band of ₹84, the firm was priced at approximately 92.6 times its one-year forward P/E multiple and 34.3 times EV/EBITDA, representing an initial market capitalization of ₹3,815 crore before its recent secondary market surge.
