US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on two of his neighbours, Canada and Mexico, from Friday. Along with this, he said that he is also considering imposing similar tariffs on China.
Announcement of imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico
Trump said that he would consider whether to include oil in the list of goods on which tariffs would be imposed. Trump told the media in the Oval Office of the White House, "We are announcing tariffs on Canada and Mexico for many reasons. We have to do this because we are incurring huge losses from these countries. These tariffs may or may not increase over time."
Trump said this
He cited illegal immigration, drug trafficking and huge subsidies given to Canada and Mexico as the reasons behind the tariff. While on imposing tariff on oil, he said, "We will consider tariff on oil tonight. Because they send oil to us, so it depends on how much it costs. If the oil prices are fair, if they treat us properly, although it is not so."
China will also have to pay tariffs
Regarding China, he said, "China will have to stop sending fentanyl to our country and killing our people. China will also have to pay tariff for this. We will decide what will happen." Let us tell you that fentanyl is a highly addictive synthetic narcotic, which according to the DEA is posing a threat as the most deadly drug in America.
Canada will respond to tariffs: Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that if the US imposes tariffs, he will respond strongly. Along with this, he asked the countrymen to be prepared for difficult times. During a discussion with an advisory council on Canada-US relations, Trudeau said that Canada is going through a critical time.
The country is ready for a response, which will be purposeful, strong but appropriate and quick. We do not want this but if they step in, we will also take action. At the moment all options are open.
