Asaram Bapu has sought suspension of his life imprisonment sentence from the Supreme Court. On his petition, the apex court has issued a notice to the Gujarat government and sought a reply. A bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and Arvind Kumar said that the issue will be considered only on medical grounds.
Asaram Bapu has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court in Gandhinagar in the 2013 rape case. The next hearing on the petition will be held on December 13. The bench said, "We will issue notice. But we will consider only the medical conditions."
The petition was dismissed by the High Court
Before the Supreme Court, Asaram Bapu had also filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court. But the petition seeking suspension of the sentence was rejected by the High Court on 29 August itself. While refusing to suspend the sentence and grant bail, the High Court had said that there is no case for relief.
Last year in 2023, the Sessions Court of Gandhinagar sentenced Asaram Bapu in a rape case. This case was registered in the year 2013 by a woman living in Asaram's ashram near Gandhinagar.
Asaram in Jodhpur jail
Asaram is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Asaram's appeal against his conviction in another Jodhpur rape case was dismissed by the Rajasthan High Court in January this year. The High Court had said that his arguments regarding the possible delay in disposal of his appeal, his age and medical condition are not relevant for granting relief.
